What is the Collective Noun for Jingles? PDF Print E-mail

With a nice little trickle of work coming through in December and January, I was wondering what you would call a bunch of jingles. Herd doesn't do it for me, nor does Pride, though I am proud of them, of course. Perhaps a Jangle of Jingles? Bucket of Jingles? Well, whatever you want to call them, here is a right little gaggle of them!

Big Johns is one of those company names where, as a writer, as soon as you hear it you are stuck with one idea only. And to be honest, so will be the listener, and you would be daft to try anything else! Big Johns got a bass, the commercials got an American and everything else worked out kind of neat with the girls

Cam Quit kind of wandered off in a different direction. The creative on the project played me a bit of trombone, which really is a very nice instrument. A few drum samples later and stunning vocals from Chris Madin and we had a really nice piece to get you on the road to giving up those coffin nails!

Funkys was one of those plain silly things. Aimed at kids, it needed to be fun and upbeat, while getting the message across to parents. I dragged out the Big Bopper again and made sure the beats per minute were right up there somewhere! (I am pointing at the ceiling, by the way). This add was mixed in a few flavours so should have longevity.

I get asked to do quite a lot of jingles for Skip Hire companies. They are a good candidate because they are a simple product. Though we can twist the ideas from "Cheap and Quick" to "Green and Responsible" depending on how the company positions them selves. Ely Skip Hire are one of the quick lot, and they are nice and local to their target market and would like to sound local too! Well, I have an old yokal lurking around the sheds, so I used him!

Hartwell Abingdon are a company in Oxfordshire that sell cars. They have been doing it for a long time. They were not interested in something over clever; they have a really good grasp on their market and wanted something with a beat, but also wasn't trying to be anything clever. We went back in time a little and pulled together something that in someways is quite retro, though with modern recording techniques. Nice wide appeal and should be usable for quite some time.

Just Bathrooms and Kitchens is one of those companies who just like to sell good product to customers in a no fuss way. The main point was to sing the name, which we did twice, and we added in "making your home so beautiful" in for good measure. A strong brass section brings the jingle thumping into your home, and the company hope they can do likewise with their product. We hope so too.

Now, what can I say about Manchettes? Being asked to do a jingle for a company that will get your car out of ditch, among other things, is a first for me. Well, if we were going to use music, it better be more than just singing the name - it better say something positive. In the end I went for a sort of a bit of reverse psychology. Leaping back into the 1950s, I composed a slow ballad of that era and penned a bit of voice over to be done, preferably, with a very depressed Liverpudlian accent. "Have you ever looked out of your car window and realised that life would be so much better if you weren't in the middle of a field?" The rest worked wonderfully!
