Very, very occasionally, in my experience, a job comes along where you just know that this will always be one of your better works. Red Johnstone, then at Transmedia, directed a documentary for ITV and Discovery about the Apollo astronauts. It told the story of the moon landings through interview with all but 1 of the men and fantastic insights from the men behind Mission Control in those days. These adventures were real seat of the pants stuff, but what they got to see, and how the moon has changed their life is tender and inspiring. I am not a classically trained composer, but I took the ambitious decision to go purely orchestral and write directly to the finished edit, reflecting every nuance while not detracting from the incredible footage of the moon. This was not a selection of tracks just nailed to the pictures; it is one piece that starts at the front and ends at the end credits. I am very proud of this work. Here is an extract from the 40 minute composition.
